Research Methodology

Before beginning any research project, you must decide which methodology to use. This will guide your study, help you to choose a way to collect data and aid in your analysis. Researchers use three primary methodology types: qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. Within these broad categories, more specific methods include an array of options, such as case studies, self-reporting and surveys.

Qualitative Research
Qualitative research seeks to explore a specific phenomena, not prove a prediction, according to "Qualitative Research Methods: A Data Collector's Field Guide," published by Family Health International. Often used in the social sciences and education, qualitative methodologies use interviews, focus groups and observations to collect data. Qualitative methods provide rich, contextual explorations of the topic that are often personally or culturally meaningful.

Quantitative Methods
Quantitative research is is more objective than qualitative methods. In this type of methodology, the researcher crafts a hypothesis and then tests it through structured means. Instead of exploring or describing a phenomena, quantitative methods deal with facts and statistics. This type of research is often used in science or medicine.

Mixed Methods
Mixed methods combine qualitative and quantitative research. This type of methodology uses several different measures that include both contextual understanding like interviews or observations along with facts or statistics. Using mixed methods can help the researcher investigate a topic on multiple levels, gaining different views and a comprehensive look at the subject. A mixed methodology meshes more than one philosophical perspective, allowing for the integration of different theories and ideas.

Methodologies and Design
Within each major methodology are various designs. These provide a framework or philosophy for the study, and are different than the actual methods used. For example, a case study design focuses on exploring and describing a specific instance, person or group. A researcher may use observations, interviews or self-reports from the subject to create a complete picture. This picture, or case, provides a detailed example of a phenomenon that can then be generalized to a similar population.

One Day Workshop on Research Tools: Supporting Research and Publication

[PERSIAPAN AWAL]

FIVE STEPS FOR CONDUCTING EFFECTIVE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH by Sarah Brown

Qualitative research can be a little complex than the quantitative research. In the latter, you only need to sum up the numerical data and statistics that you find into a conclusion. However, in the former, you need to write the whole research from an evaluative point of view. You have no numbers or figures to back up your analysis and you need to use the power of your words to deliver a study that speaks volumes.

Following five steps can help you create an effective qualitative research that could leave a lasting impression on your readers.

Step#1: Evaluate the Research Questions That Need To Be Addressed

The first and foremost step when conducting a research is to evaluate the research questions that need to be addressed. You need to decide on a topic for your research and then narrow down your choices to the queries that you need to address within the topic of your research. After you decide on the questions, only then can you move on to the next step.

Step#2: Formulate a Plan for Carrying Out Your Research

After you evaluate what questions you need to address in your research, your next step should be to formulate a plan that can help you carry out your research. You need to evaluate the list of people who will be the part of your research and the places you will be carrying your research out at. Then you need to formulate the time intervals that you will be carrying out your research in, and finally the methodology that you will use in order to carry out the plan.

Step#3: Collect All the Data Needed For Conducting Research

Try to be an observer and start collecting all the data that you need for your research. Ask people away if you want to, read out on the previous researches and ask the big fish in the pond to help you out with your research. Qualitative analysis is normally done in a small environment with lesser number of participants, as quantity tends to degrade the quality of the analysis needed for the research.

Step#4: Analyze the Statistics and Generate Results

You might have asked an easy question as a topic of your research that generated your results in yes, no or a maybe. All you need to do, in order to compile your findings into conclusion, is group the similar answers together and then evaluate the results. You can also take help of nifty software and seniors in the field to create perfect results needed for your research.

Step#5: Evaluate the Results and Draw Out A Conclusion

Make use of questionnaires and surveys to evaluate the results and draw out a conclusion. Evaluate what you believe might be the results, take in a feedback from the seniors and professionals in the field and draw out a conclusion. When you take all the factors into consideration, you will be amazed to see the effectivity of the results.

With these five steps, you can effectively conduct a qualitative research without any need of further obstructions or hassles coming your way.

How to save your time with effective search strategy!

The search can be time consuming and sometimes tedious task. How can make it easier? How do deal with situations such as:

"I just join as new postgraduate students and I am not sure how doing a literature search, What is a literature review?, Where do I begin in conducting a literature review?”

"I have been in research for some time now but I spend a lot of time to get the articles I want., What are the best materials to include in my review and how do I locate them?, Is it worth my time to search the Internet for the literature?”

"I am sure I have downloaded the article, but I am not able to find it”

"I wanted to write a new paper, how can I manage the references in the shortest possible time?”

"I have many references, some of my old papers, and some of my current research. Sometimes, they are so many that I can't recall where I have kept them in my folders!”

"I have written an article and I am not able to find a proper Journal, Are there any shortcuts for identifying a journal for submission?”

"I want to increase the citation of my papers, how do I do?"

We need an effective search strategy can save hours of wasted research time and provide a clear direction for your research. The benefits of attending this workshop are numerous and include learning how to change the direction of searching to discover and how to use more efficient the tools that are available through the Net."Research Tools”enable researchers to collect, organize, analyze, visualize, mobilize and create creative outputs. The benefits from using "Research Tools”can be summarized as helping researchers keep up to date with current developments in their chosen field, up to date information on what is regarding as interesting and stimulating by recognised professors, the ability to choose high-quality relevant papers related to the researchers field, evaluating other researcher and journals, publishing in appropriate journals, increased visibility for publications and access to important writing tools for editing, paraphrasing and summarizing.Writing your thesis or academic paper can be daunting enough but, with the use of the "Research Tools”what seemed virtually impossible will become true to any researcher.

Sharing research results is both an obligation and an opportunity. Since there are many considerations when a study concludes, Dr. Nader provided several"Research Tools” to help with the publication process and ideas for dissemination beyond publishing in a research journal. Publishing a high quality paper in scientific journals is only the mid point towards receiving citation in the future. The balance of the journey is completed by advertising and disseminating the publications. Familiarity with the tools allows the researchers to increase their h-index in a short time. H-index shows the academicians influence in the specified field of research. Therefore, an academician with a higher level of h-index is deemed to have publications of higher quality resulting in higher citations.

With the use of "Research Tools” the whole painstaking process of your research will be simplified and made easy, leaving you free to use your time for discovering.

We would like to invite you to participate in the workshop as follows:

MAIN STRENGTH AT A GLANCE Part 1

What qualifies ATLAS.ti as one of the most powerful QDA solutions anywhere? Many things, we think. Please read why we do what we do, and what we do to keep ATLAS.ti on top of the game.

(1) Superior Functionality

ATLAS.ti offers numerous functionalities that are either completely unique or clearly stand out from the rest of all QDA software packages out there. Here are just a few.

Meaningful Coding Hierarchies

The ATLAS.ti Object Explorer is a clickable tool that lists all work and connections between documents and their quotes. It shows connections of every code with every other code and provides sophisticated views of the coding scheme ( including all the interconnections). Of course, hierachical views of the coding scheme are also possible.

Grouping

ATLAS.ti lets you group codes without changing the coding scheme via its simple-to-use code families (shortcuts to codes)

Transitive Relationships

A unique and extremely powerful feature of ATLAS.ti is its capability of letting you define functional relationships, embodied in transitive (or hierarchical) links, such as 'is a', 'part of; 'causes' etc. Its powerful Query Tool lets you retrieve data based on transitivity.

Flexible Searching / Retrieving / Filtering

ATLASti makes it quick and easy to focus attention on parts of the dataset without even opening its dedicated search tools. Double clicking on code and/or document families filters your work in various ways, providing great insight into the dataset without . Codes can be sorted in multiple ways in ATLAS.ti; this adds great flexibility to the ways information about progress and frequency can be produced.

ATLAS.ti sports powerful search & retrieve functions with Boolean, semantic, and proximity-based operators. Searches always locate coded quotations in context which keeps you very close to the source data at all times.

Comprehensive Annotations

ATLAS.ti gives you numerous different ways to fully annotate your material. Attach extensive comments (even containing multimedia and embeded objects!) to any program object, i.e. quotations, documents, codes or networks. Or create standalone memos that become automous objects and are centrally listed, accessible and searchable.

Powerful Hyperlinking

Hyperlinking allows for precise point-to-point jumping around the dataset at text level. ATLAS.ti enables this very effectively for both text and multimedia, e.g. audiovisual data. In text the hyperlinks flagged in the margin view are easily navigated by clicking.

Qualitative Analysis Using NVivo

Introduction
Qualitative research is analysed the unstructured information through the data gathered from the related research topic. A good qualitative research need to follow the right procedure and paradigm to reduce bias and non-accurate result. One of the qualitative research software isNVivo which is developing to help researcher easily organize and analyse non-numerical or unstructured data. Plus, it helps the researcher manage their complex, large and messy data in a structured way. When you using NVivo as your qualitative research software; you can

» Interchange information between NVivo and other applications like Microsoft Word and Excel, IBM SPSS Statistic, Endnote and Evernote.
» Choose to work with any conbunation languages such as English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish user interface.
» Search for words that are similar in meaning to quickly test theories.
» NVivo lets you track your ideas and steps with ease. Use annotations to jot down your thoughts, create memos to capture detailed observation.
» Let you export your findings as web pages, so you can share files and findings with clients or colleagues who don’t have NVivo.

HOW TO MAKE PEOPLE CITE YOU’RE PAPER THROUGH ENHANCING VISIBLITY

Publishing a research paper in scholarly journals is necessary but not sufficient for receiving citations in future.

We need to ensure that the paper is visible to the relevant users and authors. There are tools that help in enhancing the visibility and readership of research papers.

Effective use of these tools can result in increased citations and, thus, improve the h-index of the author (h-index shows the author's influence as a researcher, see Ale Ebrahim, 2012; Aghaei Chadegani et al., 2013).

Therefore, here is a SPECIAL TIPS about RESEARCH TOOLS which will help you T0 ENHANCING VISIBILITY AND IMPACT. Here is a sample of tools to increase the visibility of one's published papers:

(a) Create an online CV: ResearcherID, Publications List, ORCID, Google Scholar My Citations, A visual resume

(b) Create an online repository: CiteuLike, Getcited, PubZone, Social Science Open Access Repository, arXiv, HAL

(c) Share bookmarks: Diigo, Delicious, BibSonomy, ScienceWISE

(d) Publish and share information: Scribd, Docstoc®, figshare, Udemy

(e) Network with other researchers: ResearchGate, Academia, LinkedIn

We hope this TIPS will help you in getting some idea about what is actually Research Tools is all about and what Research Tools can do in your research and writing thesis and for your information we do have organize workshop that can helps you to get to know better about "Research Tools”.
